Day 28 – I hate ducks
I know, that sounds like a strange thing to hate, but I really have never liked ducks. First they smell terrible; second they leave droppings all over the place; and third when I was a child we used to go to a sunrise Easter service by a lake in San Diego – at actually sunrise – and my sister and I would be dressed to the 9s in patent leather white shoes, frilly Easter dresses and hats and the ducks around the lake would chase us. Not the other way around – we did not chase the ducks – they chased US. It was traumatic. So, I don’t like ducks. I don’t want to go to Washington Park and feed the ducks. I don’t want to watch nature programs about ducks on PBS. I don’t care for ducks.
So imagine my horror when I walked into our new home in the woods and saw not one but TWO rooms covered in duck wallpaper. DUCK WALLPAPER! I mean, really – who goes to the store and says to the wallpaper dude – “I need some duck wallpaper – the most obnoxious you’ve got!”??? Well, I’ll tell you who – the people who lived here before me.
Our guest room is covered in ducks – and not just a few ducks – ceiling to floor ducks – flying all over the walls – it is enough to give you an epileptic fit if you stare at it too long. The nice thing about the guest room is that it is the dumping room right now – we just kind of throw stuff in there we don’t know what to do with yet, so we don’t use it for guests – I would NEVER subject a guest to that particular brand of horror. So it is ok to just accept that we will get to that room once we’ve finished all the others, and I can keep the door firmly shut and not think about those ducks.
BUT my master bedroom also is home to the ducks. Along the top of the walls is an horrific border of ducks. I think they are mallards, but I really don’t know and I haven’t spent a lot of time trying to find out. We’ve left the master bedroom second to last on the list of rooms to finish because we really needed to get the common areas – kitchen, dining room and living room -into some shape and of course Arden’s room was high on the priority list, so I’ve been living with the ducks in my room for nearly 2 months. It is about more than I can take. I would have stripped them off myself by now if I knew what color I wanted to paint my room – but I don’t – and I’m not sure walls with scrapped off wallpaper would be any better than the ducks. I go back and forth on whether it would be worse or better – with or without – with no clear plan in mind, but I don’t really know. It would definitely be a toss up.
The good news in all this is that Arden’s room has been painted, the dining room and living room are finished and we are making really good headway on the kitchen and all the trim that had to be stripped, sanded and repainted – so HOPEFULLY we can send these ducks south long before the winter (like in a week or so – or I may lose my mind).
See ya tomorrow!
